The ideal time to consider a green roof is as soon as alterations are planned to an existing building or when a new building is being designed. Contacting us at this stage will enable us to advise you on your requirements.
SOME GUIDANCE ON SELECTING YOUR GREEN ROOF.
(See our section ‘Types of Green roofs’ for clarification on the differences.)
- What is the remit for the roof? Will access be required?
- Do you require/have planning permission?
- What are your particular objectives for installing a Green roof? E.g. Water attenuation, Thermal insulation, or Increased Biodiversity
- The structural capacity of the roof & roof build up. General guide to loadings (approximate saturated weights) Extensive Green roofs 56- 150Kg/m² Intensive Green roofs 200-500Kg/m²
- What is the budget for the roof installation and any future maintenance: this will influence your choice; e.g. Extensive green roofs are low cost & low maintenance.
- The pitch of the roof and the structure and condition of any existing roof.
- How visible is your roof? If highly visible then the aesthetics will be a paramount consideration.
INFORMATION WE WILL REQUIRE FROM YOU INITIALLY:
- We will discuss all of the detailed specifications of your roof as described above.
- For New Builds: we would ask to have copies of structural drawings and roof plans wherever available.
- For retrofits: Written confirmation of the condition of the waterproofing/rootproofing. The waterproofing system must be leak tested and certified as such leak & root resistant IMMEDIATELY before the installation of the green roof.
- We will always need exact measurements of the roof area, perimeter, any detailing to the roof , the pitch and the height of the roof.
- Where the building is situated, the climate, exposure and aspect.
- Is the roof accessible, both throughout the installation and afterwards for maintenance? Please provide details of any construction programme constraints.
- Details of the type of roof structure, the number & position of drainage outlets & any penetrations
- Health and safety provision for installation and ongoing maintenance.
- The Timescale of your project; when will your Green Roof installation be required?
